A reflection on caregiver renewal, boundaries, and the sacred necessity of rest

Coconut Heart

The ocean whispers take a break
Your hands are strong but they can ache
The sun says rest the waves agree
Even the tallest palm tree bends
You can’t pour love from an empty end

Coconut heart don’t let it crack
Fill it up take your spirit back
Sip the breeze taste the sky
It’s okay to say no and goodbye

Your arms hold others but who holds you
The moonlight hums it knows you’re true
A tired soul deserves its peace
Boundaries like a coral reef
Protect the shore relieve the grief
Lean on the sand let it take the weight
Caregivers need to rejuvenate

Coconut heart don’t let it crack
Fill it up take your spirit back
Sip the breeze taste the sky
It’s okay to say no and goodbye

Oh oh oh

Inspiration

The coconut is one of the most treasured plants in Pacific Island culture, providing food, drink, shelter, and countless practical uses. Coconut-themed songs are popular throughout Hawaiʻi and the Pacific. I was especially inspired by Ryan Cablayan's Da Coconut Nut, whom I had the opportunity to meet in person at a songwriting workshop at the FilCom Center in Hawaiʻi in 2025. His song celebrates the coconut in a fun and memorable way. I wanted to create a song with a similar island spirit while sharing an important caregiving message.

Visual Companion

Canopy of Rest was created as the visual companion to Coconut Heart. Resting beneath the shelter of the forest canopy, the parrots remind us that even in nature, renewal begins with rest. Just as the birds pause before taking flight again, caregivers also need moments of peace to restore their own hearts.

The Lesson

The song teaches the importance of reducing caregiver stress and burden through rest, self-care, and accepting support from others.

Why It Matters

Caregivers often focus entirely on the needs of their loved ones and forget about their own wellbeing. Many decline offers of help, postpone rest, and continue giving until they become exhausted. Sustainable caregiving requires renewal, support, and time to recharge.

Musical Style

A Hawaiian style felt like the perfect match for this lesson. The relaxed island rhythm reflects the feeling of slowing down, breathing deeply, and appreciating simple moments of peace. Just as the coconut tree provides nourishment and shelter, the music reminds caregivers to receive care as well as give it.

Emotions

Relaxation, joy, gratitude, encouragement, friendship, and renewal. Rather than focusing on the burden of caregiving, the song celebrates the importance of caring for the caregiver.

Listen For

Listen for the gentle ʻukulele rhythm and sing-along chorus that create the feeling of resting beneath a coconut tree while enjoying the warmth and beauty of Hawaiʻi.
