Divyang Scholarship
Empowering Future Physicians Through Opportunity and Inclusion
Supporting deserving medical students with disabilities in India as they pursue their dreams of serving others through medicine.
What Does “Divyang” Mean?
The word Divyang is a modern Sanskrit/Hindi term meaning “divine body” or “one with divine abilities.” In India, it is used as a respectful and empowering term for individuals with disabilities, recognizing that physical limitations do not diminish one’s inherent worth, gifts, or potential.
The Divyang Scholarship Initiative embraces this philosophy by honoring the strength, resilience, and unique talents of students who overcome adversity in pursuit of medical education.
A Scholarship Rooted in Gratitude and Purpose
Established by Dr. Ritabelle Fernandes, the Divyang Scholarship Initiative was created in gratitude to her alma mater, Seth G.S. Medical College, Mumbai, and in loving honor of her parents, Phil and Jimmy Fernandes.
This scholarship provides financial assistance to deserving medical students with disabilities, helping remove barriers so that determination, talent, and compassion may flourish into a future career in medicine.
Certificate of Merit
The scholarship has been formally recognized through the Phil and Jimmy Fernandes Scholarship at Seth G.S. Medical College & KEM Hospital. The certificate shown below reflects that ongoing legacy of support for deserving Divyang medical students.
Scholarship Overview
The scholarship was established in honor of Phil and Jimmy Fernandes, with the intention of creating a lasting legacy of service through education.
